“Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three.” Luke 12:51-52
This verse may seem contradictory to other Scriptures concerning what Jesus said to His disciples about His “peace,” but consider these scenarios:
What happens when a young man decides to follow Jesus into an inner-city missionary church when his parents want him to attend law school? What happens when one marriage partner follows Jesus to church activities and the other turns aside into the drug culture? What happens when one office worker decides not to spend his money foolishly in a “football pool” while everyone else throws in a dollar or two?
The division happens when people choose to follow Him 100%, turning their backs on the world and its ideologies. James 4:4 says “that friendship of the world is enmity (hatred) with God.” There is no peace until the division line has been drawn.
So, “choose you this day whom ye will serve.” (Joshua 24:15a) There is an inner peace, when you choose Christ that surpasses all your understanding. (See Philippians 4:7.)
PRAY: “Father, I know it is Your desire that there be true peace in Your kingdom. Help me to draw a firm line of separation from the world and devotion to You. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”
