October 1 – Mercy Triumphs Over Judgment

“Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!” James 2:12-13 (NIV)

Have you ever been around someone who always has to have the “last word”…one who believes his way of doing things is ALWAYS the best way or the right way? How do you react to this irritating personality trait?

Dennis Bennett, one of the first charismatic renewal leaders in the Episcopal Church, wrote: “Better to be kind than right!” Conflict and debate with someone who does not know when to stop will only destroy YOUR spirit. James 3:18 proclaims, “…the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.” If you want to be RIGHT (righteous) in the sight of God, be a PEACEMAKER…one who sows peace.

Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (Matthew 5:7, NIV) When you show mercy by bringing peace to a contentious situation, you are touching the heart of God and destined for a great return of His mercy and favor. Your attitude of mercy will be rewarded at the judgment seat of Christ…MERCY will triumph over JUDGMENT!

PRAY: “Merciful Father, Your compassions are ‘new every morning,’* and I need them today very much. Help me to extend mercy rather than judgment to all men. Amen.”

*Lamentations 3:23
