October 22 – The Sacrament of Communion

“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” I Corinthians 11:26

Jesus said, “This do ye…in remembrance of me.” (Verse 25) For years the Jewish people have celebrated Passover with bread and wine, commemorating their deliverance from Egypt. Now Jesus was establishing a sacrament that celebrated His death on the cross and the wonderful gift of salvation.

The bread signifies His Body. The wine, or grape juice, represents His blood. His body was broken and His blood was shed for the forgiveness of sins and the healing of bodies. (See Isaiah 53:5.) “I am the living bread which cometh down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” (John 6:5 1)

Partaking of the communion elements in church is an act of spiritual union with Christ. Communion alone does not save. God desires for the remembrance of what He did on the cross to drive you to your knees and cause you to live a life obedient to His Word and pleasing to Him. The next time you eat of the bread and drink of the cup, renew your vows to serve God faithfully, with expectation of His soon return.

PRAY: “Dear Lord, thank You for Your gift of love on the cross of s

October 21 – Water Baptism

“Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him.” Matthew 3:13

Jesus set the example in water baptism and then commanded His followers to practice the same. (See Matthew 28:19.) The word in the Greek is “baptizo” which means “to dip or submerge.” Being immersed in water is a form of death, since you cannot live under water. Baptism, then, becomes a way of identifying with the death of Christ.

Romans 6:4-5 reads, “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.”

Obedience in water baptism has the effect of putting to death your “old nature” (Romans 6:6) and giving birth to God’s “divine nature” in you (II Peter 1:4). It can help you to overcome paralyzing addictions or lingering illness. Remember, the same water that destroyed the Egyptians brought deliverance to the children of Israel. (See Exodus 14:28.)

Leave the Egyptians behind. Put faith in your water baptism and partake of the divine nature that God has for you “For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
(Romans 6:7)

PRAY:  “Father, I am willing to die to the desires of my flesh in order to put on Your new nature.  Receive my baptism and give me Your resurrection life. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”

October 20 – Fruit of the Spirit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23

As you yield to the Holy Spirit and grow in God, you can expect your life to produce fruit…the fruit of the Spirit. You should see God’s love evidenced in your life…His joy, His peace…and even the ability to suffer long! You are becoming more like Jesus!

The fruit of the Spirit is “radiated” from your life. It just begins to naturally become a part of you, and others will notice the changes. God is changing even your desires by placing within you His desires. (See Psalm 37:4.) You are growing in the character, nature, and makeup of God.

Further evidence of His Holy Spirit in you is the manifestation of the gifts of the Spirit. (See I Corinthians 12:7-10.) These are the physical, outward workings of the Spirit, such as tongues, interpretation of tongues, prophecy, and the like. These workings must be “exercised” as the Spirit gives utterance.

Do you see how complete the Holy Spirit is making you? Yield your life more to Him each day. He must increase and you must decrease! (See John 3:30.)

PRAY:  “Gracious Lord, thank You for making my life fruitful. I want to be useful to You by radiating and manifesting Your Spirit to others. Fill me, Lord. In Jesus’ Name, amen.”
